Government Commits to Furthering Development of Furniture Industry

Wooden furniture contributed RM9.1 billion in export value in 2023

Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin has affirmed the government’s dedication to advancing the furniture industry’s growth by bolstering raw materials, productivity, and design initiatives. Speaking at the Export Furniture Exhibition (EFE) 2024 opening ceremony, he emphasized the importance of collaboration between the industry and government bodies like the Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB), Malaysian Timber Council (MTC), and Malaysian Timber Certification Council (MTCC) to enhance industry standards and exports. Chan urged industry stakeholders to forge stronger partnerships throughout the supply chain to explore new strategic avenues for growth, foreseeing positive outcomes and improved industry performance in the future.

Highlighting the significant role of the furniture industry within the timber sector, Chan noted that wooden furniture contributed RM9.1 billion in export value in 2023, accounting for 44.11% of the timber and timber product exports. He underscored timber’s status as one of the key commodities identified under the National Agricommodity Policy 2021-2030 (DAKN 2030), aiming for sustainable growth and a target export value of RM28 billion by 2025 and RM32.8 billion by 2030.

Echoing Chan’s sentiments, Malaysian Furniture Council president Desmond Tan expressed hope for the establishment of a raw material hub by the government to ensure convenient and affordable access to resources for industry players. With over 400 exhibitors participating in EFE 2024, the event serves as a platform to showcase the industry’s capabilities and foster collaboration for future growth.
